Abigail Min
Abigail Min is a pioneering music therapist from Myanmar who recently completed her master's degree in Music Therapy at Mahidol University, Thailand. With a background in Physical Therapy, Abigail's journey into music therapy was driven by her lifelong passion for music and a deep desire to explore its therapeutic potential. As the first qualified music therapist in Myanmar, she is leading the development and implementation of music therapy in her home country.
Abigail’s dedication to this field is rooted in her early experiences with music, having played the piano since the age of eight and actively participating in church services throughout her youth. After earning a degree in Physiotherapy, she worked closely with children with cerebral palsy and Down syndrome, where she saw the limitations of traditional therapies. This inspired her to seek out alternative methods, leading her to discover the profound impact of music therapy.
During her time at Mahidol University, Abigail was inspired by the vibrant campus and the supportive community of educators and peers. Her studies and practical experiences, particularly in group sessions at rehabilitation hospitals, deepened her understanding of how music can enhance emotional well-being and social cohesion.
Since returning to Myanmar, Abigail has been at the forefront of introducing music therapy across the country. Her initiatives include collaborations with international organizations such as Goethe-Institut and the American Center, as well as the development of specialized music therapy programs for children with special needs. She is passionate about bringing the benefits of music therapy to those in need and has already made significant contributions to improving the emotional resilience and social connections of her clients.
Abigail’s work is not limited to her local community; she is also an advocate for culturally sensitive music therapy programs on an international scale. She has shared her expertise at global conferences and workshops, and she remains committed to expanding her knowledge. With plans to pursue a PhD in music therapy, Abigail aims to further contribute to the field both in Myanmar and worldwide.
Despite the challenges of being a trailblazer in her country, Abigail remains steadfast in her mission to “brighten the corner where you are” through the healing power of music.
